SAM_0857_1Sometimes, you just need to get away and breathe.

In the early morning, mist rises off the creeks and you can hear the splash of the frogs as they leap from the banks. And there is always the sound of birdsong and silence.

In late winter the mingling fragrances of Prunus mume, the flowering apricot, and Daphne and winter honeysuckle drift across the water. And the Edgeworthia beside the pool in Kim’s Garden scents the air with hope.

In spring it’s the perfume of Narcissus ‘Thalia’ from the wood and the whisper of sweetness from ‘Valerie Finnis’ Muscari in the courtyard.

In summer, the blooms of Rosa ‘Munstead Wood’ look like velvet the color of a fine Pinot Noir and smell of a hundred old roses and a hundred years of history. As you walk from the greenhouse to the Ruin, lavender brushes your hand and you smell Provence.

And autumn brings the aroma of blush faded Hydrangeas, bottle-brushed plumes of Cimicifuga and the aging leaves of the katsura tree.

Visit on our Open Days; or contact us, we’ll reserve you a walk, or a place to meet, or breathe – in the Garden or the Wood.
